5 Keys to your Backbend

Workshop combines Asana Practice and Lecture
Our spines are incredible combinations of strength and flexibility. Budokon Yoga explores band bends as both dynamic martial arts transitions and static yogic expressions. In this workshop we will explore the five categories of action involved in developing a versatile back bend though. Traction – Where the body is bending in a way which developed space and comfort in the joints. Leverage – Where the strength of the arms or legs are used to deepen the backbend, and Contraction – Where the muscles on the back contract to overcome gravity allowing the front body to lengthen. Transition – Where the body must support itself structurally, while moving from belly up to belly down positions. Flexion – Where a bending movement around a joint can be the difference between comfort, compression or injury.

dylan wernerDylan Werner is an inversion and arm balance master and is regarded as one of the world leaders in yoga strength training and body weight movement. Dylan is a diverse teacher, able to bring the most advanced concepts of yoga and movement to anyone at any level. With a background in wrestling, rock climbing, martial arts, health and fitness, Dylan found yoga to be a culmination of everything he loves. He was first introduced to yoga through his martial arts training. Dylan started teaching yoga in 2011 after 10 years of advanced movement training. Flexibility Fundamentals
This workshop is designed for anyone working on becoming more flexible, especially if you are not a naturally flexible person or a very inflexible person.  We explore several different ways stretch, to include dynamic stretching, PNF (Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation) and Yin style stretching. We will also talk about how and why the body responds to stretching from an anatomical viewpoint and how to safely bypass these restrictions.

This is an uplifted creative partner flow, which weaves through the 5 elements of Chinese Medicine. Focus is on creative transitions and simple effective ways to use another to deepen your practice. The listening and sensitivity that is cultivated in this class will filter out to benefit your life in a myriad of ways. This class will lift your spirit, expand your heart and remind you of the great joy of exploring movement with a partner.


Dynamic Vinyasa
Jessica will lead a vinyasa flow practice focusing on twists and binds. This detoxifying flow will keep you present and mindful as unique challenges are incorporated throughout the class. The asana sequences are designed to explore the strength and flexibility of not only the body, but the mind as well.

Healing your lower back through yoga

Learn how to heal your low back through yoga postures that build strength in your legs and core to support your sacrum.  The sacrum is the key to stability in the lower back. It is the fulcrum point in our bodies from which all movement happens.  If the surrounding muscles are not stable, the ligaments and joints in the lower back will be stressed.  In this workshop, you will learn about the muscles and bones surrounding the low back area and evaluate the standing poses and core exercises needed to build strength here.  Hip openers and breath awareness adds to the healing by pacifying the low back so your students leave feeling free of low back pain and gain the tools to help them stay there!

Simon is a director of YogaSynergy, one of Australia’s most respected yoga schools with a style based on a deep understanding of yoga anatomy, physiology and traditional hatha yoga. Simon is a registered physiotherapist and has been teaching since 1982.

Introduced to yoga at an early age, Simon started the postures and movements of hatha yoga around 1980, eventually learning from BKS Iyengar, K. Pattabhi Jois and TKV Desikachar.

From 1985 his main teacher was Natanaga Zhander (Shandor Remete). Simon had the privilege of studying with him for almost two decades.

In 1988, Simon and yoga teacher Bianca Machliss started developing the unique YogaSynergy system.

Since 2007, Simon has continued his training with Master Zhen Hua Yang, who has achieved remarkable levels of physical and physiological skill due to the knowledge gained from Tibet as well the Shaolin and WuDang temples in China.

Simon regularly gives artistic demonstrations of advanced yoga vinyasa. His personal history has been featured in various publications and he has contributed chapters on yoga to several technical books.

As well as training teachers in the YogaSynergy System with Bianca Machliss, Simon has been teaching courses in the Applied Anatomy and Physiology of Yoga in Australia and internationally. Simon has also been an invited guest lecturer at many major yoga teachertraining courses throughout the world.

In 2007 Simon and Bianca were approached to create a course called ‘Applied Eastern Anatomy’ as part of the new Master of Wellness degree for RMIT University (Melbourne). It’s the first time Yoga has been taught as a university degree subject.

In early 2014 Simon and Bianca conducted their inaugural Yoga Synergy residential Teacher Training Course in Goa, India. Certified by Yoga Alliance, it will become an annual event.
